Zazzle Quality Review

Picking up steam with unique customizable products and partnerships with huge companies like LucasFilm and Disney, Zazzle is now considered by many to be the industry leader. They’re also reaching out to the art world with their Artsprojekt program.

You can upload images from your account, and can then select that image to create a product. The shirt design screen helpfully shows your design as it would appear when worn, and you can print on either side of the shirt.

I sent two files for printing at Zazzle, one solid-colored illustration of a dinosaur skull and one full color photograph of leaves. Here’s what those files looked like on Zazzle’s site when ordering:

My order arrived about a week and a half later:

The lack of branding on the packaging surprised me.

Once opened, the package contained the two ordered shirts and a receipt… and that’s it. I have to admit I expected something a bit extra here, at least an insert or something.

Printing on a dark American Apparel shirt at Zazzle is incredibly expensive- this design on Forest Green totaled an exorbitant $29.65! At such sky-high pricing, I was expecting a really nice print. Instead, the results were fairly mediocre. The sizing is a bit low and on the small side, but the really irritating bit is that white outline around the black lines:

The white outline really stands out with such a dark shirt color. And even worse, the black ink isn’t solid! As you can see, in some places there are actually white speckles in it. Very strange, and not very attractive.

Thankfully, though, Zazzle really nailed the printing of the photographic image. The colors are very close to what was sent, and the detail is reasonable. Size and positioning are also just right.
